Product quiz, rules, leads, and testing
Use this after Matchly is installed. Getting started covers the trial, creating the quiz, and placing it on the theme.
The editor tabs are Questions, Flow Map, Settings, Embed, and Rules. Publish is on the editor bar. Shoppers only see the last published version, and only when the quiz status is Active or Private.
Build a product quiz
- Open the quiz and stay on Questions.
- Add a question. Choice types are Single Choice, Picture Choice, and Yes / No. Text Input and Slider collect an answer but do not recommend products by themselves. Question Group puts several questions on one page.
- Drag questions into the order shoppers should see them. Open a question and turn on Required question if they must answer it.
- For a picture choice, open each option and set Option Image. If the question itself has an image, Image Layout can be Background, Top, Left, or Right.
- Open an answer and map the catalog:
- Product Tags. Type the same tags you use on the products, separated by commas.
serum, anti-agingmatches products that carry those tags. - Products. Choose the products. On each one, Weight is extra ranking points when this answer is chosen. Leave it empty, or set 0, to clear the weight.
- Collections. Choose collections. Products in those collections join the match.
- Product Tags. Type the same tags you use on the products, separated by commas.
- Set Branch to. Next question (default) continues in order. Pick another question to jump. Skip to results ends the questions. Open Flow Map to read the paths.
- Select the result step:
- Layout: Grid, List, Carousel, or Tinder Style (shoppers swipe to add or skip).
- Max products: from 1 to 20.
- Results policy: Strict — matched products only shows an empty state when nothing matched. Mix & match — fill with bestsellers fills the page from your catalog only when the result would otherwise be empty. It does not add products onto a list that already has matches. Manual — pick fallback products shows products you choose, again only when nothing else matched.
- Optional: Show “Share results” button and Show “Add all & Checkout” button.
- Open Settings → Theme & Appearance if you want a preset. The presets are Minimal, Modern, Classic, and Bold. Colors for the page, choices, and buttons are on that same tab.
- Set Quiz status to Active, then Publish.
Products have to be available on the Online Store or they will not show, even when an answer names them.
Recommendation rules
Scoring from tags, collections, products, and weights runs first. A rule changes that list only when every condition is true. The tester and the storefront both see a rule only after you Publish.
- Open the Rules tab. The empty state says Create rule.
- Name the rule so you can recognize it in the tester, for example
Dry + acne. - Under When all of these are true, choose Add condition. Pick a question that has choices, then is, is not, or is any of, and the answers. Every condition must be true. Text, slider, email, name, and phone fields cannot be conditions.
- Under Then, pick one effect:
- Show only these products. Replaces the whole result with these products, in the order you select them. If two of these rules match, the higher priority wins and the other effects are ignored.
- Pin these products to the top. Keeps the scored list and moves these products to the front.
- Boost these products. Adds the Boost points you enter so those products rank higher, or appear when they were not in the scored list.
- Never show these products. Removes them even if they scored highest.
- Choose Select products. A rule needs at least one condition and at least one product.
- Optional: Why we recommend these (shown to shoppers). The result page can show that sentence on the products the rule names.
- Set Priority. A larger number is checked first and is listed first. The up and down arrows swap that order.
- Publish again.
Use a rule when a combination should override the score. Do not create a rule for something one answer can already do with a tag or a weight.
Capture leads
Contact fields do not map to products. A quiz can be only those fields, a text question, and a slider. That is a form. Responses still store every answer.
- On Questions, add Email, Name, or Phone. Or add Contact details (group), which places email, name, and phone on one page.
- Write the question the way you want shoppers to see it. Placeholder is the hint inside the field.
- Turn on Required question if they should not continue without it. If it is optional, a shopper can skip it and you will not have that detail on the response.
- Put the contact questions where you want them in the flow. A common place is just before Skip to results, after the shopper has answered the product questions.
- Open Settings → Notifications. Turn on Email me on each submission.
- To is who gets that email. Separate several addresses with commas. Leave it blank to use the store owner email. CC, Subject, and Message are optional. The message can include the name, email, and phone from that submission.
- Publish.
Read submissions under Responses, from the quiz menu or the left nav. Filter by quiz, by Completed or In progress, and by Converted or Not converted. The totals on that page include completion and revenue. Analytics shows completions, conversions, and revenue for the shop and for each quiz.
Matchly keeps the lead on the response and can email your team. It does not send the lead to another marketing app.
Test the answers
The side preview, the rule tester, and the storefront are three different checks.
- In the editor, use the preview beside the questions (on a phone, switch to Preview). Walk the questions and the branches, and check the colors. That preview is not the real product list, and it does not place an order.
- Publish before you test recommendations. The tester and the storefront both use the last published questions, mappings, and rules. A rule you have not published yet will not fire in either place.
- On the quiz list, open the quiz menu and choose Preview. Under the quiz, Rule tester says to pick one answer per question. Contact fields are not listed, because they do not change the match.
- Choose Run test.
- Rules fired names the published rules whose conditions matched. If none matched, the banner says the list is the scored result only.
- Results is the product list after weights and rules, cut to Max products.
- No products matched this combination means nothing scored and no rule added a product. The tester does not apply the results policy. On the storefront, Mix & match or Manual can still fill that empty list.
- Set the status to Active and save the theme. Open the storefront, not only the theme editor, and take the quiz yourself. View on storefront on the quiz menu stays off until the status is Active. A product the tester lists can still be missing on the storefront if it is not available to buy.
- To confirm revenue, add a recommended product and pay for a test order. Analytics and Responses count that paid order as a conversion. An unpaid draft does not.
If the tester and the storefront still disagree after you publish, see troubleshooting before you rewrite the rules.
